Alia Bhatt Gets Emotional About Don’t Be Shy Says Being a Producer Brings a Different Kind of Joy

Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt recently joined the cast and crew of Don’t Be Shy at the film’s trailer launch, where they opened up about their experience of bringing the coming-of-age romantic comedy to audiences. For Alia, the project carries a special significance as she steps into the role of a producer while also introducing four new actors and a debutant director. Speaking about the journey, the actress admitted that she was feeling more nervous than the newcomers themselves as the film prepares for its global premiere.

Talking about collaborating with Amazon, Alia expressed her gratitude towards the streaming platform for backing the film and providing it with a wide-reaching platform. She said, “Thank you Amazon for believing in Don't Be Shy and for giving it a platform. Such a wonderful platform. Um because it's really a story very close to my heart and I feel everyone will resonate with it because we all love what comes with growing up.” Her words underline the personal connection she has with a story that revolves around the messy, unpredictable and often exciting process of finding one's way through adulthood.

Alia also reflected on how dramatically her role in the industry has evolved since her acting debut. She said, “You know, 14 years ago, I made my debut as an actor and 14 years later, I am today introducing four new actors and a debutant director. And I'm way more nervous than they are right now. I really have butterflies in my stomach because, you know, to answer your question, I love being an actor and I love being in front of the camera. But being a producer has another sort of, you know, fulfillment. It gives me another level of joy because we've been involved in building the world, building the story from the word go from when Shri came to us with an idea saying I want to make a movie like this and we said okay let's do it together. We took two years to build it out and then we took it to our lovely partners at Amazon. I remember Friday is when we sent over the material to you and on Saturday morning Nikl messaged me saying Alia let's speak.” The journey, she explained, has involved being part of the project from its earliest idea through the development of its story and world.

That hands-on process appears to be one of the reasons Don’t Be Shy means so much to Alia and Shaheen. Produced by the sisters under their banner Eternal Sunshine Productions, the film follows 20-year-old Shyamili “Shy” Das, a young woman whose carefully planned life suddenly falls apart after her long-term boyfriend breaks up with her. Determined to get revenge, Shy unexpectedly finds friendship and comfort in Tara, her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend, setting the stage for an unconventional journey of love, friendship and self-discovery.

The film introduces Aarushi Bajaj as Shy, alongside Ansh Duggal, Bianca Arora and Piyush Khati, while Neha Dhupia and Anurag Basu add experience to the fresh ensemble. At its core, Don’t Be Shy explores the familiar uncertainty of growing up and the realisation that life does not always follow the carefully drawn plans people make for themselves.
